Kemper Coley was born in the Panama Canal Zone, a year before his sister, who was born in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. His travels continued throughout Europe and the United States, until 1973, when he settled down in Colorado. While painting and traveling in the US, in 1993, his truck broke down in Taos, New Mexico. He never left.
