Cloudscapes, rural mountain scenes, weathered shacks, pond reflections, and nature through and antique microscope. “Taos-based Susan Rudd captures the Rocky Mountain terrain in a clean, modernist style that calls to the curious. In attending to the interplay between light and nature, she uses pastels to blend and layer in a vibrant palette that emphasizes shape and form over detail.”
As a graduate student in biology I had to find ways to understand aspects of nature and be able to explain what I learned to other scientists and students. Microscopes big and small became my tool for exploration. I always felt like an astronaut lifting off into space as I discovered invisible-to-the-eye details of life. Chalkboard drawings in front of audiences became my method of sharing what I had discovered. Years later in a secluded Montana A-frame on the bank of the Clark Fork River, nestled in the Kootenai National Forest, I began painting full-time using pastels. I have had feature articles in Southwest Art magazine and have been represented by galleries in Arizona, Idaho, Montana and New Mexico.
